A fun new way to find recipes

fbs-logo.jpg I’m pretty picky about what online recipes I’ll use. I’ve pretty much settled on Epicurious.com as my choice when searching. I like seeing a photo and reading reviews, and they have a vast online library. But so many people are out there cooking incredible things every day and their dishes don’t make it into the hallowed pages of Epicurious. And Google returns too much “junk food.” What’s a foodie to do?

Thankfully, I recently discovered Food Blog Search, where, according to site founder Elise Bauer of SimplyRecipes, thousands of people around the world share their stories, recipes, methods, and photos. Using Google search technology, Food Blog Search limits its results to food blogs handpicked by the site managers. (And yes, Forks.ca is included!) If you become addicted, as I foresee I will, you can with one click add a Food Blog Search button to your Google toolbar (as I did).

And while I won’t give up Epicurious just yet, as a food blogger myself, I agree wholeheartedly with the statement on the site that:

These blogs are the labors of love of countless people from around the world who are so passionate about what they cook and eat they spend hours photographing and writing about it. Food bloggers usually give much more information and personal touches to what they write about than commercial cooking or recipe sites. Search for a recipe among food blogs and you'll often be delighted by the hidden jewels you uncover.

I searched for mascarpone this afternoon. We have a container in the fridge we bought for a dinner we ended up not making when I was struck by the flu. I want to use it up before I leave town next week (Vegas!). The first few pages gave me dessert results, but a girl has to be at her slimmest for Paris later this month, so I skimmed past those selections. On page 5 I found Pasta with Spinach and Mascarpone on Anne’s Food, where a 30-year-old owner of five cats in Stockholm shares her love of good food. It looks delicious and I can’t wait to try it.

Do check Food Blog Search the next time you’re in recipe-hunting mode. I have no doubt you'll find something tasty too!
