As I was walking by my garden this morning I noticed that my rhubarb is ready to cook with. It always comes as such a surprise - the growing season has begun! I plant a modest Kitchen garden in a few raised garden beds. In late July my raspberry bushes offer up beautiful berries (most don't make it to the kitchen, but are eaten immediately, straight from the bush!). There's also a Nanking Cherry tree in my garden that keeps the kids happy. They love to eat the small cherries and then spit the pits all over the yard. (...sweet children, eh?)
And in another corner of my garden I noticed the oregano is up. I use copius amounts of oregano in my cooking, so I'm always glad when late spring brings the fresh variety for me to use.
Of course all of this garden activity has me itching to go to the garden centre and pick up some basil plants. (I can never grow it from seed where I live.) But, basil is so fantastic fresh that I always grow some in my kitchen garden in the summer. I love cooking with fresh basil!
Every cook should try and have, at the very least, a small herb garden to harvest while making summer recipes. Some great herbs to grow are Parsley, Thyme, Basil, Mint, Oregano, Chives and Sage. Fresh herbs add such punch to your cooking.
I'm already compiling the list of dishes I'll get to make this season with ingredients fresh from my garden!
Happy Cooking!
