Ready to replace your wedding-gift blender or mixer but don’t know where to start? This month’s Food&Wine magazine called up 36 companies and asked for their best small appliances in nine categories, which they then proceeded to test -- toasting, blending, whipping and frying -- in order to share their results with us. (What a fun job!)
The testers judged the appliances on their performance, design and ease of use. What they evidently didn’t judge was pocketbook shock. Only a handful of these items rings in at less than $100. I think I’ll stick to my kitchen full of KitchenAid for the time being.
Here are their winners.
Blender: Breville Die Cast Hemisphere ($300)
Convection Toaster Ovens Krups FBC4 6-Slice Convection ($200)
Deep Fryers Aroma ADF212 5-Liter ($70)
Food Processor Oster 10-Cup 3200 ($90)
Hand Mixers KitchenAid 9-Speed Professional ($90)
Juicers Hamilton Beach Big Mouth ($90)
Panini Presses Cuisinart Griddler ($130)
Pod Espresso Machines KitchenAid Pro-Line Series ($600)
Rice Cookers Zojirushi 10-Cup Induction ($365)
Immersion Blenders Braun Multiquick Impressions MR 5000 ($60)

We have that Zojirushi rice cooker, but didn't pay $365!!!!!
We got it on eBay actually. It's amazing. And even though it says to ONLY make rice in it, it also does steel cut oatmeal like a champ. Sssshhhh. Don't tell them!
