Foods around the world: Lángos in Budapest

Enjoying a langos in Budapest I love sampling street food in the countries we visit. One of my favorite discoveries was a deep-fried concoction (are any of the best street foods not deep fried?) in Hungary called lángos (pronounced lahn-gosh). Costing the equivalent of about a dollar at the Vásárcsarnok (Central Market Hall), lángos is a potato dough that’s fried, loaded with cheese then slathered with sour cream. You eat it while standing amongst the buzzing hustle of the grand market, from a wax paper and if you’re lucky with one playing-card sized napkin. (Hint, to clean up the grease, lick your fingers!). Delicious! It’s impossible to have just one so save yourself the trouble and just order two to begin with. And according to my husband it’s the perfect accompaniment to a beer.

If you are headed to Budapest and want to taste lángos for yourself, check this Budapest blog for a list of places to try this treat.

Want to make your own? This video on YouTube shows you how.
