Gearing up for Passover

Passover, or Pesach as it's called in Hebrew, is swiftly approaching. With the coming of the holiday emptying out your bank account to shop until you literally drop from exhaustion is the name of the game. Observant Jews 'turn over' their kitchens, removing every bit of leavened products and those food items that are not Kosher for Passover (KLP). And once you've cleaned everything out, it's time to go shopping to purchase the unbelievable amount of food you're going to need for at least 3 large seder dinners, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a week. Plus candy. Can't forget the pesach candy.

But what really makes Pesach the most exciting holiday for my kids is that they get to drink Coke for the whole week. You see, Pesach coke is not the same as other coke. Regular coke has corn syrup, and we don't eat corn during Pesach, so this means we have to search out the elusive but oh, so good Pesach coke. The coke with the (shhhh, don't tell) Yellow Cap and the Hebrew writing on it. The coke that tastes so much better than regular coke.

In my community, getting enough KLP coke for the week can be tough. Many non-Jewish folks know how great this coke is, and will snap up as many bottles as they can to hoarde them for the rest of the year. This makes for some very annoyed Jewish kids when mom and dad can't get enough coke to satisfy their desire.

My kids don't drink soda at all during the year. The only time we buy soda is at Pesach. I get myself the Dr Brown's Cream Soda, which I love, and the kids grab as much coke as they can get.

Once the soda is purchased, it's time to head for the Kosher store for some other important purchases. Stay tuned as I describe this shopping trip in detail!
