Lunch on the cheap in Paris

A sandwicherie on Rue St JacqueWith the euro at record highs while we were in Paris last week, my friend Tracy and I sought out budget-friendly quick lunch stops. We stumbled upon a great new place near Notre Dame called the Sandwicherie. The contractors in and out and bits of construction paraphernalia scattered about clued us in to how new it actually is. You'll find it at 7 Rue, St. Jacques. (Look for the purple and orange awning.)

I enjoyed brie and greens on a generously-sized half baguette, while looking out onto the busy Latin Quarter street behind Eglise Saint-Séverin. To fortify myself for an afternoon of sightseeing I had a "long" (large) café crème. Tracy had a sandwich as well, and a Coke Light. Our grand total? €9.50.

This tiny, cheerful sandwich stop is run by a couple of friendly young guys who will give you a repeat visitor card -- buy five sandwiches get one free. They also offer fresh pastas and desserts in addition to sandwiches. And worth noting, a clean bathroom.

Another day at lunchtime found us in Le Bon Marche, where one outpost of Cojean is found. I recalled reading about this soup and sandwich shop, created as a healthful alternative to fast food by a former McDonald's CEO. We popped in and chose from a selection of soups and sandwiches, all priced around €4 to €6. They also offer vegetable juices, though I regret to say I can't recommend the carrot and ginger juice. Shudder. My soup of endive, basil and parmesan was unusual and pretty tasty, though I would have liked a hunk of baguette served with it. If you know to ask they'll give you two teeny baguette slices.

Eating at Cojean in this location (there are 10 in Paris) , you'll feel like a temporary local, surrounded by regular working Parisians on lunch breaks.

For an inexpensive lunch in Paris you can't go wrong at either stop.
