Last night I enjoyed a preview screening of Walt Disney World & Pixar's newest film Ratatouille. Not only was it about the delights of food and cooking (With a theme of 'Anyone Can Learn to Cook.'), it took place largely in a Parisian restaurant kitchen. With the Eiffel Tower as the background, red wine as the elixir and creating recipes as the goal, this 'cartoon' appealed to this big kid.
Remy is a rat with a nose for good food, eating garbage like his family isn't for him. He accidentally finds himself drawn toward a famous chef's cookbook (Gusteau) and eventually ends up in this same chef's restaurant - in the kitchen of course. Remy hooks up with the 'garbage boy', Linguini, and as a team they create dishes that have Paris demanding more. Even the sharp tongued food critic, Ego, is delighted by the pair's genius in the kitchen.
When Remy fills in the holes to a mystery and demands the recognition he deserves for his part in creating wonderful recipes, Linguini denies him. The cooking duo are set to part ways, but with a sudden conscience to set things right, Linguini, 'rats' on what has been going on and who has been doing the cooking. This sets the course for a dramatic kitchen scene where no one is cooking except for a few hundred rats.
The characters are fun, realistic and have the biggest expressive eyes you've ever seen. You'll be laughing at how realistic their facial expressions are.
This movie is delightful, funny and is constantly referring to the smells of cheese and herbs. It stresses how the right combination of foods can literally make fireworks in your mouth. It was so fun for this foodie to watch, I'm sure I enjoyed it more than my kids did! (Although they loved it.) Go watch it!
Happy Cooking!
