Tummy Aches

When someone is down for the count with a tummy ache in our family, we try to follow the BRAT diet, but let's face it, bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast gets really mundane very fast. I know it's a great diet to settle a gippy tummy, but sometimes a little more flavor is needed to keep the sickie both healthy and satisfied. So, when the tummy ache strikes, I boil some chicken with carrots, celery, an onion, and some parsley, and make a nice soothing broth.

I also cook rice using the chicken stock, which adds a bit of flavor. If someone's on the mend, I'll add pieces of boiled chicken to the rice, and maybe even a bit of spice to make it more flavorful.

The thing that my kids clamour for when they're sick is a simple, but delicious treat. Cinnamon toast. It's easy to make, quick for those starvation tantrums, and it tastes great.

Toast the bread until it's fairly dark. Butter with a thin layer of butter. Then top with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. Serve.

Could anything be more simple? And it tastes so good when you're feeling nauseated. So grab a big bottle of ginger ale, pour some homemade applesauce in a bowl, and serve it with cinnamon toast. Your sickie will be happy!
